Midwifery care in English
Welcome! We are Veronika and Ronja, two freelance midwives at the market square in Essen-Kupferdreh. Care in English is offered by Ronja. On this page we explain how midwifery care works in Germany — and how we can support you and your growing family.
What a freelance midwife does
In Germany, every woman is entitled to the care of a midwife during pregnancy, birth and the weeks after the birth — the Wochenbett. Freelance midwives (freiberufliche Hebammen) like us work independently of hospitals and doctors' practices: we carry out antenatal check-ups, answer your questions, and look after you and your baby once you are home again.
What we offer
Antenatal check-ups
Regular check-ups (Vorsorge) during your pregnancy. These appointments take place in our practice rooms at the market square.
Postpartum home visits
After the birth we come to you: home visits during the Wochenbett to look after you and your baby — feeding, healing, weight and all your questions.
How much care you can receive
The scope of midwifery care is set out in the national midwifery care contract (Hebammenhilfevertrag) between midwives and the statutory health insurers.
Check-ups, advice and help with pregnancy complaints, including CTG monitoring — as often as medically needed. Ultrasound scans remain with your gynaecologist.
At the beginning we usually visit you every second or third working day; over time the visits become less frequent, depending on your needs. There are normally no visits on weekends and public holidays.
Good to know
Our services are covered by statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenkasse).
Midwifery care does not replace the check-ups with your gynaecologist — it complements them. Many families use both in parallel.
Births take place at the hospital and are attended by the midwives employed there — not by us. We care for you before and after the birth.
Please note: we do not offer birth preparation courses in English. Our antenatal classes are held in German.
